Why Is This Important?
Epilepsy, which is defined as two unprovoked seizures, begins to occur most often in people with autism either before 5 years of age or after 10 years of age, but it may begin at any time. Epilepsy in autism is highly associated with mental retardation, and those with normal or near-normal intelligence have a low risk of developing it.
Researchers are interested in finding out how many children with ASDs have had seizures or been diagnosed with epilepsy.

This chart shows that, at some point, 7% of affected children in IAN Research have been diagnosed with seizures or epilepsy. This figure goes up to 11% when only children age 10 and over are considered, as shown below:
